Are you thinking about upgrading your kitchen countertop? Before you go out and buy the first one you see, make sure to do some proper research first. Countertops are a vital part of any kitchen. Making sure they look nice but are also functional is very important, especially if you are redoing your whole kitchen. Our team here at TEKA Kitchen has some low maintenance countertop ideas that you might like. With these options, you won’t have to worry about things like liquid spills, food stains, and cooking heat.
Some people are hesitant to buy countertops due to their price but this shouldn’t be the only deciding factor when choosing one. Just think, it’s going to last a lifetime and you should have to spend money again to buy another one. So, even if it is a little expensive now, it will be a one-time cost.
Here Are the Options
Laminate
This is a fancy term for plastic. With a laminate countertop, it also has a very hard particle board layered with this plastic surrounding it. You can use it in your kitchen due to it being long-lasting and tough. Another great thing about it is that it comes in many different looks/styles. It is a relatively inexpensive way to get an expensive looking countertop. For instance, you can get a laminate countertop that looks like marble or granite. Because it’s plastic, this makes it easy to clean and doesn’t need sealing. Due to it being so inexpensive, if you like to change the look of your kitchen relatively often, you can without breaking the bank.
Engineered Quartz
Some of the most popular materials for countertops today are marble and granite. But, as trends go, they change pretty quickly and now engineered quarts are becoming increasingly popular. It is composed of about 90-95% natural quartz and 5-10% resin, pigments, and polymers. This allows it to come in a variety of different colours. Also, since it’s engineered, the surface is not porous, making it the ideal kitchen countertop. It is also easy to clean and stain resistant.
Solid Surface
This is a completely man-made material. It is made of acrylic, marble dust, bauxite, and polyester or epoxy pigments. In 1967, DuPont first introduced this surface material, which was branded Corian. After that, other manufacturers have offered this very low maintenance countertop but under different names. The only downside to it is that it is not very stain resistant, making it high maintenance to clean. But it is moisture-resistant and heat resistant.
Soapstone
Just as the name suggests, its surface texture is soapy. It gets this from being a metamorphic rock that is rich in talc. It is a natural stone found in quarries. If you use soapstone for kitchen countertops, it typically has lower talc, allowing it to be more durable and able to withstand heat. The only downside is that it is not particularly hard. This means that, over time, it can develop scratches. However, an easy fix is to sand it every couple of years. Because it’s not very hard this allows it to be cut into many different shapes to fit your requirements for your kitchen. The positives on it are that it doesn’t react to acidic materials, is stain resistant, and heat resistant.
